The Board of Review (BOR) consists of three residents appointed by the Township Board of Trustees. The Board of Review members serve two-year terms starting on January 1 of each odd-numbered year. Members are voters of the township, at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and must have lived in the township for at least 30 days & cannot be an assessor's relative. There are no statutory requirements regarding skills, training or experience that members must meet. Board members should be citizens interested in the public good, to the goal of fair, just and equitable property tax administration.
March Board of Review (MBOR)
The Assessed and Taxable Values are available on our website at www.indtwp.com. Notice of Assessment, Taxable Valuation and Property Classification (Assessment Change Notices) will be mailed out every year the last week in February and will show the change in Assessed and Taxable Values from the previous year to the current year. If you disagree with the Assessed Value, you may schedule an appointment to appeal your value at the March Board of Review. The Assessed Value represents 50% of market value.
In addition, you may appeal a classification change if applicable. You may also file an Application for Hardship Exemption or a Disabled Veterans Exemption Affidavit, by completing the applications and supplying required documentation for consideration. Both of the forms can be found under the printable forms tab on the left. If you miss the March Board of Review, these may also go before the July and December Boards of Review.
Valuation appeal and Hardship Application appointments can be made by calling the Assessing Department at 248 625-8114. The 2021 MBOR will be in session March 8 from 9 am - 4 pm and March 9 from 2 pm - 9 pm at the Independence Township Hall Main Meeting Room, 6483 Waldon Center Drive in Clarkston.

Monday, March 8th, 2021 Appointment times are from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm & 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Tuesday, March 9th, 2021 Appointment times are from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm & 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A resident or nonresident may appeal their value to the MBOR by mail by submitting a completed and signed "Petition to Board of Review" (Form L-4035). This form is available at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/l4035f_2658_7.pdf
and at the Township Assessing Department at the address indicated above. Or you may email it to email@example.com. This form should be mailed to the Independence Township Assessing Department at 6483 Waldon Center Dr, Clarkston, MI 48346. It must be received prior to the close of the March Board of Review and documentation supporting your opinion of value must be attached.
Please remember that the March Board of Review is an appeal process to review property values, not tax bills. The Board of Review has no jurisdiction over the millage rates that are multiplied against taxable values in order to calculate the tax bill. Appeals are for the current year only.
July Board of Review (JBOR)
The July Board of Review will be meeting on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 to review Hardship Exemptions Applications, Principal Residence Exemptions not timely filed, Disabled Veterans Exemptions, and qualified Assessor Corrections.
December Board of Review (DBOR)
The December Board of Review will be meeting on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 to review Hardship Exemption Applications, Principal Residence Exemptions not timely filed, Disabled Veterans Exemptions, and qualified Assessor Corrections.
