Building, Planning & Zoning

The Building Department is responsible for issuing all building permits and oversees the required inspections for existing and new construction projects and the enforcement of building and zoning codes to ensure quality development. We also review temporary and permanent sign applications, commercial tenant change of occupancy, and land use permits.

The Planning & Zoning Department coordinates applications to the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals.  We serve as the Township’s primary point of contact for citizens, developers, and members of the business community with questions regarding the Township’s Zoning Ordinance and land use regulations.

We are proud to announce our online permit issuing / inspection scheduling system is now live on www.bsaonline.com. Select Oakland County then Charter Township of Independence. Online permitting is only available to licensed contractors and you may need to contact our office to obtain your online PIN number. You may do so by calling 248-625-8111 (option 1) or emailing us at buildingdept@indtwp.com
