Employment Opportunities

Independence Township Fire Department is always accepting applications for part-time firefighters, regardless of experience or training. Part-Time Firefighters (often referred to as Paid On-Call Firefighters) are a highly valued and integral part of our daily operations and are held to the same moral, professional, and uniform standards as our full-time staff. Part-Time Firefighters receive pay commensurate with experience, level of EMS licensure, and responsibilities, and are paid an hourly rate per-call responded to.

The first step in the process is to qualify you to serve your community. Interested persons need to meet the minimum requirements prior to applying:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Michigan Bureau of Fire Service Firefighter I/II Certification.
  • State of Michigan Emergency Medical Technician (Basic, Specialist, or Paramedic) license.
  • Be a resident of Independence Township.
  • Be a citizen of the United States, or a permanent resident alien.
  • Have a valid Michigan drivers license with a clean driving history.
  • Be willing to submit to, and pass, a criminal history background check.
  • If prior military, provide a copy of your DD-214 or NGB-22 indicating Honorable Discharge from service.
  • Able to pass a standard medical exam (physical) and drug screen.
  • Physically capable of performing the tasks required of a firefighter.
Applicants meeting these minimum requirements can print and fill out an application HERE. Scan and email the completed application to jobs@independencefire.us, or fax it to (248) 625-1776, or it can be hand-delivered to our Headquarters at 6500 Citation Drive Clarkston, MI 48346. One of our staff will review the application, and call you back and set up a time for you to come in and fill out the authorization to conduct a criminal background check. The background check authorization must be filled out in person.

Please include copies of all the appropriate certifications and licenses with your application packet.
