Payment Dates to Avoid Penalties
Summer taxes are due on July 1 and payable through September 14 without penalty or interest. Beginning September 15 through September 30, a 1% interest penalty will be added. Add an additional 1% interest for each calendar month thereafter on the unpaid tax balance. Failure to receive a tax bill does not waive penalty or interest. Winter taxes are due on December 1 and payable through February 14 of the following year without penalty or interest. Beginning February 15, a 3% penalty will be added to summer and winter tax statements. February 28th is the last day we can accept tax payments at Town hall. All unpaid taxes are transferred to Oakland County beginning March 1st.
Payment can be made at Town Hall by check, cash, or credit card. If paying by mail, please pay by check only. If using credit/debit cards, a 2.75% service fee will be added. E-check payments are also accepted online with a $0.95 service fee. NO part of this fee goes to the Township. The fee is the amount charged by the service provider and the credit card company.
Note: Effective January 1, 2018 the return of a check (electronic or paper) issued to Charter Township of Independence will result in a returned check fee of $30 being placed on the account that was to benefit from the payment, no matter the reason. Motion 2017-12-250 approved 12-19-2017
